Vaccine Efficacy In Men Vaccine Trials
Vaccines which include protection to additional high-risk strains other than HPV strain 16 that are available in the current vaccines are underway.
HPV in vaccines are increasingly being recognized as offering immunity HPV-related disease in men as well as women. Increased focus is being made on prevention of genital warts in men, as well as the prevention of anal and rectal cancers and oropharyngeal cancers in both men and women. The possible value of HPV vaccine preventing cancer of the penis in men is also being studied.
The long term goal of adding HPV vaccines into the immunization schedule would be to lower the cost of delivering the vaccine and to detain the infections by making the vaccine available to approximately 80% of the world’s children. Long term studies will demonstrate whether or not a booster dose will be needed in the pre-adolescent or early adolescent period, and bridging studies are being done to assess this approach.
